But here's the rub: If you plan to use a wireless router to connect to the internet over Wi-Fi, you're going to want one that can actually offer speeds that match your lightning-quick optical line. Many major ISPs, such as Verizon and Xfinity, offer fiber connections directly to your door, known as FttP or Fiber. If your existing router meets specific Wireless Standards requirements, you may be able to use it with fiber internet. The fiber optic cable from the street terminates at the ONT, and then an Ethernet cable connects the ONT to your router.
