IEC 61850 smart distribution is becoming a strategic pillar for modernising German medium-voltage (MV) grids. For Stadtwerke, regional DSOs and industrial campus operators, it enables unified communication, higher automation depth and efficient integration of renewables and EV. EFR offers smart metering and smart grid solutions for end-to-end measurement and grid management tasks and, in this context, offers a coordinated and thoroughly tested range of packages consisting of modern metering devices, smart meter gateways (BSI-CC-1000) and control boxes. The German Association of Energy and Water Industries (Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft – BDEW) and the German Electric and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie – ZVEI) have worked together in analysing these questions and give. The digitalization of the German energy system depends on smart meters being rolled out. Solutions to these and other issues of energy and environmental policy are being developed in the E-Energy technology programme, which is promoted by the Federal Ministry of Eco-nomics and Technology in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear.
