Smart Metering fibre optic, energy supplier optical fibre networks and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) form the technical backbone for digital transformation in the energy sector – only comprehensive optical fibre infrastructure enables intelligent metering . In this work, we present the design, laboratory tests, and the field trial results of a power-over-fiber (PoF) low power instrument transformer (LPIT) for voltage and current measurements in the medium voltage distribution networks. The two proven and optimal communication technologies for application-specific needs are Synchro-nous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) solutions.
